Position Details
Job Overview
You will:
• Interpret and portray the work, skills and activities of an 1860s tavern livery worker and teamster by driving expertly all hitches used in association with the livery, training horses for different vehicles and hitches, and tending livestock in an historically correct manner.
• Perform tasks associated with the Cook’s Tavern Livery and other stations within the Farms Unit such as helping to operate the tow scow and drag saw, pitching hay, maintaining vehicles and implements, cleaning stables, making deliveries, milking, gardening, minor harness repairs, feeding other livestock, etc.
• Perform the tasks associated with operating horse-drawn carry-alls for visitors in the Village and in Crysler Park
• Provide visitors with information about structures, settings and activities throughout the site
• Participate in the delivery and support of youth programs & other Village features, events & programs
• Ensure the resolution of visitor concerns and questions
• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site
• Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.
Required Skills/Experience
MANDATORY:
• Horse-driving skills.
• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Sector check).
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
• An understanding of the immediate historical context of all activities being performed.
• An understanding of the social, economic and political environment to a level typical of a skilled labourer or tradesperson in the mid-nineteenth century.
• The ability to interpret and portray the work, skills and activities of an 1860s tavern livery worker and teamster.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to identify and report any potential hazards or needed repairs, and to take corrective action where possible. Ability to learn and follow safety and emergency procedures appropriate to the location and activities performed.
CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
• Strong oral communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of the work, skills and activities of an 1860’s tavern livery worker and respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.
