Position Details

Job Overview

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

• Perform lead hand duties and provide technical guidance and expertise to staff and volunteers on 19th century handwork techniques

Perform and interpret a wide range of advanced handwork skills, e.g. quilting, plain and fancy sewing, knitting, spinning, crochet work, rugmaking, and dressmaking.

• Interpret domestic and related settings and lifestyles at Upper Canada Village

• Interpret Village life and features and support Village initiatives

• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site

• Instruct adults and children participating in various experiential programming

• Assist the Historic Costume Specialists in costuming duties  

• Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests

Work Schedule: 
Variable up to 36.25hr/wk

Required Skills/Experience

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:

• Conditional upon the successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Sector Check).  

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

• A demonstrated high level of knowledge and skill of 19th century handwork methods  

• A strong understanding of the immediate historical context of handwork activities and the social, economic, and political environment of the 1860s

• A strong understanding of conservation practices to advise visitors on the proper treatment and  care of artifacts and to competently perform a variety of duties associated with the care of village textiles.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

• Strong oral and written communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of handwork and to respond effectively to customer questions and concerns

• Strong oral and written communication skills to create textile related training materials and to teach staff handwork skills  

COMPUTER SKILLS:

• Ability to use a computer for common administrative tasks such as word processing, emails, and internet searches  

JUDGMENT, ORGANIZATIONAL AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS:

• Strong planning, organizational, and design skills to assist with the development of projects, activities, exhibits, and training programs  

• Ability to keep records of supplies and past and on-going projects  

LEADERSHIP, PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH SKILLS:

• The ability to train and direct staff on the proper procedures and methods in completing mid 19th century related handwork

• The ability to monitor on-going handwork projects to ensure adherence to established guidelines

• The ability to perform research and synthesize findings
