Job Overview
JOB SUMMARY:
Lifeguard/Swim Instructors will be responsible for the delivery of Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life and Lifesaving Programs. This position might also participate in coaching the competitive speed swimming team that will train and enter local competitions, perform general lifeguard duties during public swim sessions, and assist in program registration.
Required Skills/Experience
PRIMARY DUTIES:
• Responsible for completing reports; shift reports, incidents, and accidents;
• Responsible for educating the public in the policies and procedures related to pool/swim safety;
• Providing the highest standard of lifeguarding with an emphasis on the prevention of accidents and injuries;
• Maintain order and ensures proper conduct of persons using the facility;
• Always ensure a clean and safe environment;
• Conduct minor pool maintenance such as skimming and vacuuming;
• Conduct minor facility maintenance such as cleaning washrooms and weeding fence lines;
• Communicate with parents throughout lessons and complete report cards for swimmers;
• Adhere to high standards of the employee code of conduct and demonstrate understanding that their personal actions impact the public’s perception of the Municipality and;
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Supervisor(s) or Manager of Community Programs and Partnerships.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a secondary or a post-secondary education program.
• Valid National Lifeguard (NL) and Swim Instructor (SI) training and certifications. Applicants without both certifications may be considered for a Junior Guard position.
• Lifesaving Instructor certifications are encouraged.
• Able to work with patrons of varying age groups.
• Current knowledge of provincial legislation and health and safety as it relates to aquatic operations.
• Knowledge of Lifeguarding rules, regulations, and practices.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise considerable independence of judgment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with coworkers and public.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.
