Tri-County Literacy Council
Role Summary:
The Adult Literacy Tutor will work one-on-one with an adult learner to help improve their literacy skills, including reading, writing, comprehension, digital technology, and/or essential communication skills. The tutor provides tailored, supportive instruction, with the support of the agency, that empowers the learner to achieve their personal and educational goals, fostering confidence and independence.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized instruction in reading, writing, comprehension, digital technology, and/or basic communication. The tutor will be provided with an individualized learner plan supplement detailing the student’s literacy level, individual goals, and helpful resources to work with.
- Incorporate practical, real-life materials to support the learner’s goals (e.g., job applications, health forms, technology basics).
- Offer encouragement and constructive feedback to boost learners’ confidence.
- Track and report learner progress, noting areas of improvement and continued needs.
- Communicate regularly with the Coordinator of Volunteers to discuss progress and any challenges.
- Submit volunteer hours once a month.
Qualifications:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and adaptability to various learning styles and needs.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Basic understanding of adult learning principles (training will be provided).
- Previous teaching or tutoring experience is a plus but not required.

Location: 333 Pitt Street, Unit 103, Cornwall, ON; Tutors and students have the option of meeting in other mutually agreed locations that are deemed as safe such as a public library, etc.
