What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• Develop and coordinate weekly food schedules and safely plan, prepare, cook and serve meals appropriate to the children and youth summer camps at Upper Canada Village.

• Order and pick up food and necessary supplies.

• Ensure all menu guidelines and health regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and dining hall.

• Support Upper Canada Village programming, customer service and revenue initiatives.

• Act to ensure the safety of camp participants and staff and protect the resources of the site.

Work Schedule: 
36.25hr/wk

Compétences/expérience requises

How do I qualify?

MANDATORY:

• Valid Food Handler certification or ability to obtain one.

• Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate or the ability to obtain one.

• Valid Class “G” Driver’s License.

• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted the required security clearance for the position (Vulnerable Service Sector check).

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

You have:

• The ability to manage kitchen operations: plan, prepare, cook and serve healthy meals and snacks for large groups (30 or more); maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment; and provide training and mentoring to other staff.

• Experience working with children and youth in a residential camp setting, or school cafeteria, or day care kitchen facility.

• An understanding and knowledge of the safety, sanitation and safe food handling practices to operate equipment and maintain food preparation and eating areas in clean condition.

• Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act to ensure the safety of campers and staff, reporting immediately any potential hazards or needed repairs.

COMMUNICATION AND CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS

You have:

• Strong oral and written communication skills to speak, read and understand basic cooking directions and have strong communication skills to give instructions to a team of camp counsellors and lead in children’s programming, provide information to supervisor regarding any issues, and respond to customer inquiries.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS

You have:

• Strong planning, organizational and problem-solving skills to create menus, following the Ontario Health Unit’s recommendations and guidelines, and purchase and pick up food in a time and cost-efficient manner.

OTHER SKILLS

You have:

• The ability to work in a team environment with minimum supervision.

• The physical ability to carry out the functions of the position.
